The most productive scientific discipline in China is chemistry, where researchers published more than 132 thousand papers that received more than 629 thousand citations. However, the most cited discipline was molecular biology and biochemistry with a citation index of 9.12. Clearly, China is trying to become a world leader in life sciences that are critical for the new bio-technologies of the 21st century.
