| Cultivated land as a percentage
of total land area, 1996 |

Source: Ministry of Land Resources.
Note: Index was calculated and mapped with the RAPS-China tool. A
value of 0 is equivalent to the national average; positive values
indicate higher than average percentage of cultivated land, negative
values indicate lower than average percentage of cultivated land. The
map displays standardized values. |
|
As expected, the highest percentages
of cultivated land are reported from the North China Plain. Shanxi,
Jilin, Liaoning, Guizhou, Hubei, and Heilongjiang have also a
relatively high percentage of cultivated land. The reason why Sichuan
has a lower than average percentage of cultivated land is the
relatively high percentage of mountains and grasslands in some parts
of the province, which are unsuitable for cultivation. |
