Cultivated land as a percentage of total land area, 1996

Source: Ministry of Land Resources.
Note: Index was calculated and mapped with the RAPS-China tool. A value of 0 is equivalent to the national average; positive values indicate higher than average percentage of cultivated land, negative values indicate lower than average percentage of cultivated land. The map displays standardized values.

As expected, the highest percentages of cultivated land are reported from the North China Plain. Shanxi, Jilin, Liaoning, Guizhou, Hubei, and Heilongjiang have also a relatively high percentage of cultivated land. The reason why Sichuan has a lower than average percentage of cultivated land is the relatively high percentage of mountains and grasslands in some parts of the province, which are unsuitable for cultivation.
